A Travel Guide to Aspen in the Summer

12 things to see and do!

Phillip Matthew

In the past, when I've thought about Aspen, I had this picture painted in my mind of winter, snow and world-class skiing. After my recent trip to this picturesque winter wonderland, I can personally tell you that, contrary to popular belief, Aspen is not just a glamorous winter getaway. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Summer is also a season not to be missed in this stunning, blushing town. Summer in the Colorado Rockies is when nature is in full swing and I was blown away by the scenic beauty that surrounded me. Bluebird skies, warm weather, and endless sunshine makes Aspen the perfect place for relaxation as well as adventure. From hiking to cycling and fun festivals that bring the cultural soul of Aspen to life, this trip by far exceeded my expectations and is undoubtedly a can't-miss Summer destination.

Check out what I did on my Aspen Summer Adventure below!

1. Visit the Farmers Market: A great way to spend your Saturday morning! All Colorado made, grown and produced items!

2. Cycling: We did two bike rides during our stay. East Of Aspen trail is an easy trail you can run, hike or bike and is dog friendly. My favorite trail we did was The Rio Grande. Depending where you start in Aspen, it is a ride of about seven miles in length (one way) and one and a half hours. It runs along the Roaring Fork River and is one of the most beautiful paved trails in the country! We biked to the famous and funky Woody Creek Tavern which is a great spot for lunch and margs. Most of the trail is downhill and they have taxis outside the restaurant that can load your bike in the back and drive you back into town if you prefer not to do the uphill trek back.

3. Shop Until You Drop: I had a great time puttering through all of the cute boutiques and shops. Aspen also has enough high end luxury stores to give Madison Avenue a run for it's money!

4. Take a Gondola ride: My girlfriend got married at the top of the gondola. The peak of Aspen Mountain is 11,212 feet. To get to the top of the mountain, me and the rest of the wedding party as well as the guests all rode on the Silver Queen Gondola. The views were spectacular and breathtaking. The delicious food at the wedding was catered by The Little Nell hotel. Taking a trip to the very top is a must while you are in town.

5. Brunch and Lunch: Peaches had the most amazing brunch and lattes! Spring Cafe is also really yummy and is a natural organic cafe and juice bar using 100% organic ingredients to create vegan and gluten free dishes! For an incredible Cobb salad stop by The Little Nell for lunch.

6. Have Dinner at JBar: It's the town's iconic social hot spot located inside Hotel Jerome. Their burger is next level and their short rib tacos are a must!

7. Where To Stay: The Gant is the perfect balance of condo and hotel. It is located on the quieter end of Aspen! I really loved the free shuttle service. They were super helpful getting us into town. I also loved how close the hotel was to everything. The staff was incredibly friendly, the property was stunning and the room was spacious, comfy and spotless.

8. Take a trip to an Oxygen bar: I had terrible Altitude sickness when I first landed. Matthew at One Love Smoke shop is super friendly and helped me combat the worst headache of my life. For $35 you get 20 minutes of oxygen! I felt instantly better!

9. Visit an Art Gallery: My girlfriend had her rehearsal dinner at the gorgeous contemporary Baldwin gallery! It includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, video and installation-based work.

10. Sunbathe by the pool: Sitting poolside in Aspen is an experience within itself! Surrounded by breathtaking mountains, The Gant has an excellent pool!

11. Go to a Festival or Concert: The hills are alive with live music and concerts all summer long!

12. Go Fishing, Paddleboarding or Rafting: The concierge at The Gant was an expert and was ready to put together any adventure we requested!
